Red Hat on the S&P 500 is a sign of Linux maturity

When Red Hat had its IPO in 1999, many (myself included) saw it as the real coming of age of Linux. While there is little doubt that IPO was a big event for Red Hat and Linux, perhaps an even more important one from a milestone point of view will officially occur this Friday. As of Friday July 24, Red...

The Linux Foundation has released the first update to the popular "Who Writes Linux" study originally published in April 2008. The study is written by kernel developers Jon Corbet and Greg Kroah-Hartman and surfaces the people who are writing the code, the companies that are sponsoring the work, and the pace of development.

Hi all,

I’m after a linux utility that can relay all incoming traffic on a certain port to another server. Can anyone recommend a good program?

I’ve taken a look at snmptrapd, but it’s not obvious how this can be configured for my requirements.

Many thanks.

//fedora10 ip
username of admin and password

I am able to view the admin and shared printer of fedora 10.

When i try to enter in the admin folder i am not able to access it. It is giving error "Access is denied"

My smb.conf file is as above

————————–smb.conf————————————-

Code:

# This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
# smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed
# here. Samba has a huge number of configurable options (perhaps too
# many!) most of which are not shown in this example
#
# For a step to step guide on installing, configuring and using samba,
# read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection. This may be obtained from:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samb...Collection.pdf
#
# Many working examples of smb.conf files can be found in the
# Samba-Guide which is generated daily and can be downloaded from:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-Guide.pdf
#
# Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
# is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
# for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
# may wish to enable
#
# NOTE: Whenever you modify this file you should run the command "testparm"
# to check that you have not made any basic syntactic errors.
#
#---------------
# SElinux NOTES:
#
# If you want to use the useradd/groupadd family of binaries please run:
# setsebool -P samba_domain_controller on
#
# If you want to share home directories via samba please run:
# setsebool -P samba_enable_home_dirs on
#
# If you create a new directory you want to share you should mark it as
# "samba-share_t" so that selinux will let you write into it.
# Make sure not to do that on system directories as they may already have
# been marked with othe SElinux labels.
#
# Use ls -ldZ /path to see which context a directory has
#
# Set labels only on directories you created!
# To set a label use the following: chcon -t samba_share_t /path
#
# If you need to share a system created directory you can use one of the
# following (read-only/read-write):
# setsebool -P samba_export_all_ro on
# or
# setsebool -P samba_export_all_rw on
#
# If you want to run scripts (preexec/root prexec/print command/...) please
# put them into the /var/lib/samba/scripts directory so that smbd will be
# allowed to run them.
# Make sure you COPY them and not MOVE them so that the right SElinux context
# is applied, to check all is ok use restorecon -R -v /var/lib/samba/scripts

Damn Small Linux Booting Problems

I recently downloaded a <a href="http://linuxtracker.org/index.php?page=torrent-details&id=a70973fbcb485a25d22c6676fb8a1c9ad2abd0cf” target=”_blank”>DSL iso file. I loaded the iso in VirtualBox and it worked perfectly, but when I wrote the iso to a CD using k3b and I tried booting it, I got an error. I tried booting from the disk in VirtualBox and got the same error. "FATAL: Could not read from the boot medium! System halted." Does anyone know of an iso that they downloaded that worked for them?

copy_from_user does not copy from process-heap

Hello all,
I need a positive reply from you.
I want to copy the user-process-heap to the kernel space memory.
For that, I wrote the following code but it does not copy.
—————- code ————–
unsigned long length_of_heap_vma = < length of vma pointing to process-heap > ;
void * kernel_mem = (void *) kmalloc(length_of_heap_vma,GFP_KERNEL);
unsigned long bytes_not_copied = 0;

bytes_not_copied = copy_from_user(kernel_mem,(void *)vm->vma_start,length_of_heap_vma);//vm points to process heap
printk("failed to copy %ld bytes.",bytes_not_copied); //it always displays a non-zero value.
—————- end of code ——–

now the PROBLEM is that – the code successfuly compiles, but when I execute it, it copies not a single byte and
bytes_not-copied always becomes equal to length_of_heap_vma. No compile-time or execution-time error occurs.
(note: my process has the following dynamic memory in user-part:
int * p = (int*) malloc(5 * sizeof(int));
for(i=0;i<5;i++)
p[i]= i;
)

How to Upgrade to Alsa 1.0.20 on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (known by the acronym ALSA) is a Linux kernel component intended to replace the original Open Sound System (OSS) for providing device drivers for sound cards. If you are experiencing sound issues on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 or just want the latest version, you may want to upgrade to ALSA 1.0.20 (Ubuntu Jaunty comes with Alsa version 1.0.18rc3 – you can check this by typing this in a terminal: cat /proc/asound/version). Kernel Bug Lay Undiscovered for Eight Years

A Linux kernel bug in network socket initialization could allow an attacker to acquire root privileges to inflict damages. The security hole applies to all kernels of the 2.4 and 2.5 series and has been around possibly since 2001.
